Projects by the Jane Goodall Institute

TACARE

The Jane Goodall Institute initiated the Lake Tanganyika Catchment Reforestation and Education (TACARE) project in Tanzania in 1994. The program was designed as a pilot project to address poverty and support sustainable livelihoods in villages around Lake Tanganyika while arresting the rapid degradation of natural resources, especially in the remaining indigenous forest. The program focuses on community socio-economic development and offers training and education in sustainable natural resource management. The activities include tree nurseries, training in agro-forestry, micro-credit workshops for small businesses, education in health care, family planning and counselling in HIV/AIDS.

Roots & Shoots
Roots & Shoots was founded in 1991 by Jane Goodall and has now become a movement of young people around the world. Youth and "children of all ages" develop own, small projects in the areas of nature and environment, form groups and contribute to the improvement of all life on earth.

"Partnerships in Understanding"

Partnerships in Understanding is a correspondence program that pairs Roots & Shoots groups from around the world. By sharing information and ideas, young people have the opportunity to celebrate their own cultures and learn about those of others.

Knowledge leads to compassion
Roots & Shoots inspires youth through community service and service learning.
This global program emphasizes the principle that knowledge leads to compassion, which inspires action. All Roots & Shoots groups show care and concern in three areas: the human community, animals, and the environment.
